1000 hungry monkeys disrupt the latest festival in Thailand, the scene shocked everyone
An annual fruit buffet for monkeys is a tradition of the people of Lopburi and is also part of the attraction for tourists.
Lopburi is a province in Thailand, since 1980 this place started to organize a large-scale fruit party for monkeys. This is one of the religious traditions, very attractive to tourists because of its grandeur.
People call this festival “Monkey Buffet”. Due to the impact of the Covid-19 epidemic, this year the number of hungry monkeys coming to this festival is very large, estimated at 1000. They spilled onto the roadway, climbed onto tables, sat in wheelchairs laden with fruit outside the town’s 800-year-old Pra Prang Sam Yod temple.
Organizer Yongyuth Kitwatananusont said the monkeys have a special preference for durian. Last year’s party, there were almost no visitors to this festival, but this year, when the epidemic situation improved, more than 100 visitors came to witness the chaotic scene of this monkeys.
Thai people have a great respect for monkeys. The animals appear in the ancient story of Rama, who could not have rescued his wife Sita from the clutches of a demon lord without the help of the monkey king Hanuman and his army of monkeys.
Today, many Thais see the monkey as a symbol of good luck and prosperity. Traditionally, when the “Monkey Buffet” festival opens, people will wear monkey costumes and perform dances. Then the offerings are laid out and the monkeys rush to eat.
This year, some monkeys were even drawn with images of drinking bottles of mineral water and juice. It is estimated that up to 2 tons of food is transported to this festival to feed the monkeys.
