Stunning footage of a sneaky hyena surprising a leopard was just posted online. Field guide Jason Joubert, 33, captured the meeting on camera as it took place in Sᴏᴜᴛʜ Aғʀɪᴄᴀ’s Western Sabi Sands National Park.
Joubert stated that as they watched the leopard get ready and awake, a male hyena was ambling down the road in their direction. He reasoned that he must have been following the leopards’ smell. With each step, the hyena inched ᴄʟᴏsᴇr to the leopard as it approached. The leopard appeared unaware of the pungent visitor as it brushed its paws. They anticipated the hyena would not approach the leopard directly since they believed the leopard would have sensed it immediately. However, this was not the case.
The hyena and leopard were now nearly face to face when the leopard slowly stood up, almost still in a daze. To defend itself, it leapt up and hissed and growled at the hyena to scare it away.
Everyone in the car laughed out loud at the amusing situation. The leopard started grooming after the hyena’s brief disappearance because there was no longer any reason for him to stay ᴄʟᴏsᴇ by and no prospective food to forage for.
