Among these majestic beasts, the leopard stands as an exceptionally skilled animal, possessing a comprehensive set of running, climbing, and swimming abilities. Nature, it seems, has bestowed upon the leopard these skills to compensate for its slight disadvantage when compared to its siblings. With a rather modest physique, measuring around 2 meters in length and weighing between 30 to 90 kilograms in adulthood, the leopard thrives.
A distinctive physical structure equips the leopard for remarkable bursts of acceleration. Scientists have calculated that this creature can achieve speeds of up to 120 km/h, covering an impressive 8 meters with each stride during a sprint. Astonishingly, in just four strides, the leopard can reach a speed of 95 km/h.
Moreover, leopards possess exceptional vision, granting them a field of view exceeding 200 degrees. This remarkable eyesight enables them to accurately gauge the distance to their prey and identify lurking dangers. However, their night vision is relatively poor, compelling them to focus on hunting during daylight hours, even under the scorching midday sun.
Thanks to these advantages, the leopard emerges as one of Africa’s most successful creatures.
The leopard’s diet primarily consists of wildebeest, wild buffalo, zebras, and various antelope species inhabiting the grasslands of Africa. Nonetheless, faced with fierce competition from other predators, including their own relatives, and the significant decline in animal populations due to environmental changes, antelopes find their hunting lives increasingly arduous.
